Located north of Adelaide in South Australia, the Clare Valley is one of Australia’s oldest and most celebrated wine regions. Vines were first planted in the 1840s by Jesuit priests at the centre of the valley, establishing the valley’s first winery in 1851.
The valley’s unique geography sees elevations between 300 and 600 metres. This coupled with a distinctive climate of warm, dry days and cool nights, preserves the natural acidity and aromatic freshness. Combined with the region’s ancient limestone and slate soils, these conditions produce wines of remarkable purity, balance, and longevity.
Over the past century and a half, the Clare Valley has evolved through the dedication of pioneering families and independent producers who have shaped its identity. Their respect for the land and commitment to craftsmanship continue to define the region today.
While Riesling remains the Clare Valley’s championed variety and is admired globally for its precision, minerality, and ability to age gracefully — the region also excels in Grenache, Mataro, and Cabernet Sauvignon; each expressing a distinct sense of place from its sub-regions such as Watervale, Hill River, and Clare itself.
For TOPE Wines, the Clare Valley offers more than a home — it’s a landscape of heritage and possibility. A region where tradition and innovation coexist, and where every vineyard tells a story of resilience, character, and connection to land.
